"St. Archangel Michael" Orthodox Church
The “St. Archangel Michael” Orthodox Church in the village of Goritsa was built in the mid-19th century and stands as one of the most significant spiritual and cultural monuments in the region. Its construction is closely linked to the Bulgarian National Revival and the local population’s aspirations to preserve the Orthodox faith and Bulgarian identity.
The idea of building a stone church arose following the opening of the village school in the 1840s. Despite serious obstacles and prohibitions from the Ottoman authorities, the residents of Goritsa succeeded in obtaining an official building permit after appealing to the Sublime Porte in Constantinople. In 1853, two brave envoys from the village, Todor Piryov and Zhelyu Topala, set off for Constantinople to petition the Sultan for permission to build their own church. Their efforts bore fruit, and in 1856, the church was completed and consecrated. Named after St. Archangel Michael—the heavenly protector of the village—the church opened its doors to gather the community in prayer and ritual.
Architecture and Interior
The church is a three-nave basilica, built without a dome and featuring sturdy stone walls. The interior space is divided by two rows of wooden columns, with flat ceilings over the three naves. Of particular value are the iconostasis and the bishop’s throne, which are adorned with rich wood carvings combining geometric motifs, floral elements, birds, and angelic figures.
Spiritual Legacy
For decades, the spiritual leader of the temple was Archpriest Angel Radev, a native of the village. Born into a wealthy family, he had the privilege of studying in Constantinople. According to local legend, in 1871, he welcomed the great Bulgarian revolutionary Vasil Levski in the village (then called Orman), provided him with shelter, and accompanied him the following day to meet Father Petko Doynov in the village of Erkech. Father Radev served the parish for 46 years until his death in 1918 at the age of 85. As a sign of gratitude and respect, he was laid to rest in the churchyard.
Current Status
In the 1970s, the “St. Archangel Michael” Church was officially declared a monument of culture. Today, it remains one of the oldest functioning Orthodox churches in the Pomorie Municipality and continues to serve as a living spiritual center for the local community.

Dobrovanski mushrooms
The Dobrovan Mushrooms are three whimsical rock megaliths shaped like giant mushrooms. They are located in the Eastern Balkan Mountains, near the village of Goritsa, between the villages of Sini Rid and Kozichino. The site is named after the former village of Dobrovan, which was relocated in 1963 and no longer exists. The location offers an unparalleled panoramic view of the entire Gulf of Burgas, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and photographers.
History and Ancient Significance
These rock formations are part of a vast ancient sanctuary complex, indicating that the site held significant cult value for the region’s earliest inhabitants.
Hypotheses and Legends
An intriguing hypothesis suggests that the Dobrovan Mushrooms may be connected to people from Ancient Egypt. According to this theory, exiled Egyptian priests brought their polytheistic beliefs here after Akhenaten imposed the exclusive worship of the Sun God. Researcher Nikola Nikolov claims that images and scenes from Ancient Egyptian mythology can still be recognized on the surface of these rocks.
While primarily shaped by natural erosion processes, some sources believe the formations bear traces and symbols connecting them to ancient beliefs and powerful energy ley lines.
Conservation Status
Recognizing their unique geological and cultural value, the Dobrovan Mushrooms were officially declared a Natural Landmark in 1973.
